If you already know for sure that port will not work with Windows 7, then if the install continues beyond selecting Install and maybe the Key entry with Windows 8, you know your system is capable. To test, I would put a USB 2.0 flash drive in a USB 3.0 port then try to install Windows 8. It might add another piece to the puzzle knowing this fact.
